Arnold Schwarzenegger can't run for president, can he?

He was not born in the United States. Don't you have to born in the United States to be President?

  1. You must be born in the USA to become president..
  2. the constitution would have to be amended before he could run and that is highly unlikely.
  3. Generally, you have to born in the US, but this is open to debate. Article II Section 1 says you must be a "natural born citizen."

There has never been a court case to prove this, but most scholars believe "natural born citizens" would include children of diplomats and military members who are born while their parents are stationed abroad.

What is unclear is if this extends to children of US citizen born abroad. If their parents spend five years in the US, they are actually US citizens at birth.

None of that applies to Arnold, however. So, nope, he can't be President under current law.

  4. No, he can't. But don't worry. Ron Paul IS running!

    Yes!

  5. Schwarzenegger was not born in the US. He was born in Austria. He could run for president if an Amendment were made to the US Constitution. Unfortunately, that action would make the US vulnerable to foreign control–and you know that someone would find a way to accomplish that.
  6. Not under current law
  7. In order to be president of the United States, you have to either be born as a citizen or have been born before the Constitution was ratified. Remember, the first few presidents were born a British citizens.
  8. At present no; you have to be US born and 35 years of age but several groups are lobbying for a constitutional ammendment. That requires a two-thirds vote from both the House and Senate. I can't see that happening before 2008 and not since the Republicans lost majority of the House.
But if it happened, I shudder to think of the 2012 campaign slogan "I'll be back"
  9. no, he can't be Pres. Yes, you have to be born here and 35 yrs old.
  10. The U.S. Constitution sets relatively strict requirements about who may serve as president and for how long. Under Article II, only a natural-born citizen of the United States is eligible to serve as president; a person born outside of the United States, even if he later becomes a citizen, may not serve.
  11. Yes, you do have to be born in the US. I can't give you the exact chapter and verse but it would be in Article 2, which deals with the presidency. He also has to be 35 years old.
  12. No he can't… Borne a US citizen in one of the requirements….
