Will extra muscle really speed up my metabolism enough to help me lose a significant amount of fat?

Since an extra pound of muscle only burns 30-50 extra calories, will a few extra pounds of muscle really speed up my metabolism enough to help me lose a significant amount of fat?

  1. I am female and my body does not build muscle easily.
  2. Most definitely. As a female you should not be worried and think if you weight train to much you will have huge ugly muscles. This is improbable as females do not have enough testosterone to stimulate this. The woman you see on tv with the huge ripping muscles are all on steroids. You routine should not be revolved around gaining enough muscle for that to do all the work, you must do cardio. Weight training has a vast amount of benefits from preventing osteoporosis-which women are mostly susceptible to; to gaining muscle which makes you look more toned even if no fat has been lost. So why not have that extra helping hand, do not expect it to do all the work but it definitely helps. cardio sessions will be the majority fat burners.
  3. Definitely. If your looking for ways to really keep your metabolism revved up drink green tea. I kid you not, You can research this anywhere it's a known fact. Also Cardio such as running will keep your resting heart rate up and eat 6 small meals a day rather than 3 large meals. Those are some easy alternatives if you have trouble gaining muscle.
  4. Absolutely. If you have more muscle mass, you will burn more calories all the time, even when you sleep.
  5. The best way I found to lose weight is to make sure my calorie intake is no more than 2000 calories a day and no more than 500 from fat. Also exercising everyday for at least a half hour will not only produce more muscle mass and less body fat but the repetitive workouts also keep the heart pumping strong and that is the key to keeping a good metabolism.
  6. Yes!! It is the very best way. Exercising, building muscle to build calories.. then you don't have to minimize your diet as much so your body wont go into starvation mode and try to save calories either!!
  7. A pound of muscle burns 30 - 50 extra calories AT REST.

    Per Hour, EVERY HOUR.

Also, the work that you do to produce and maintain that muscle will burn far more calories.

Vigorous exercise that raises the heart rate, done for 15 - 20 minutes will cause the body to burn calories at an increased rate for 2 - 3 hours after exercising is completed.

  8. Yes. It is extremely helpful.

  9. Yes. No doubts about it. As you get older your muscle tends to decrease and fat accounts for more of your weight… so your metabolism slows…. also men have more muscle generally speaking, than women which is why men generally have a higher BMR and burn more calories than women do. Aslo, its the effect of the afterburn (the repair process) caused by exercise that burns the most calories. A person who is sedentary will have a considerably lower Basal Metabolic Rate by comparison to a person who works out every day with a good cardio and weight lifting program… at least half as much again…. so weight loss is easier with more muscel growth.
