Can I lose my gut and build upper body muscle at the same time?

I am a 49 year old male with a 42" waist. (Yes, it protrudes out further than my chest.) I am mostly healthy and active otherwise.

  1. About three weeks ago I decided to conquer this gut thing. Now, I eat mostly all low fat food, (calories from fat less than 30%.) Every morning, I do 70-80 sit-ups on the ab-lounge chair and do 20 minutes on the elliptical machine. (Whew!) I also alternate workouts with heavy weights. Chest, neck, and shoulders one day, arms and legs the next day.
  2. yeah, sure! just have some perseverance! It will pay off!
  3. Good job on the diet and sit-ups, you are on your way (weigh?). One thing you may want to know is the elliptical is not going to help if you use it <20 minutes per session. As a general rule of thumb, only the workout beyond 20 minutes will help you burn fat (and only if you do it at a brisk pace–get a heart rate monitor).
  4. Do not increase carbs, but increase proteins. Yes, as you mentioned, that does mean you are consuming more calories per day. And it will in theory slow down the rate of your weight loss.

    But in theory, as you build muscle mass, it will all work out. Because the greater the muscle mass, the more calories you will burn in a day.

    I would increase your protein intake, and increase your elliptical machine time slightly (to burn off more calories).

  5. So far I am down 6 or 8 pounds from 180 but, some of my muscles have actually gotten smaller.
  6. Do I need more carbs to feed my muscles or is this just normal? If I increase carbs and protein for muscles, won't that blow my diet?
  7. Confused about sustenance.
  8. Building upper muscles can help you to lose your gut. Also, a personal trainer can assist in your exercise goals as well as to help you know what / how much to eat.
