Is there a way to get a good chest(male) without bench pressing?
I'm a 21 year old looking to join a public gym like Bally's. I really want to work on my upper body(I'm a beginning weight lifter, but not fat)such as the chest/pecs. What are some exercises or tips that are good for the chest besides bench pressing? I say without, because I won't have a spotter at a public gym. Finally, to stay on topic, is it possible to build nice pecs without benching? Thanks!
- If you're not going to have a spotter, you might be better off finding a gym which has machines instead of free weights.
Machines are safer to use if you don't have a spotter. You can't drop the bar on your chest on a bench press machine. The worst thing you can do is to drop the weight stack and shatter the weights, but I've never seen this happen.
Me, personally, I prefer the feel of free weights, but a lot of times, I don't have a spotter either, so I had to compromise and used the machines. If you're just starting out, machines and free weights will give you the same results.
Good luck.
- I highly advise you to bench when in the gym. It's the most efficient and important excercise for the chest. If you don't have a spotter, use dumbells or the smith machine.
- FIrst of all by your pic and age I bet you already have a good chest. I hope you aren't beig too hard on yourself. My husband keeps thinking he needs to look better and I think right now he looks great. If you are working out, and eating healthful foods, chances are you look devine!
- There are visible muscles beneath every layer of flab, you just need to lose the flab. Losing weight will make you look more muscular.

- Man, if you dont have a spotter, just do like 20 lbs on bench press as a start. if you can't lift 20 lbs, try 10 lbs. dont be ashamed. do more reps while lifting less weights.

- There are all kinds of ways to build your pecs. The classic push-ups work well. Too hard? There are many push-ups! Try your hands close to your side, and then far apart. Try hand placement a little back, and in front of you. These will work different parts, as well as vary in difficulty. You'll find an easy one that works for you. Also you can do it standing up. Put your feet together and push against a wall. Lean against the wall at different angles, and push up from it, and back down. Sort of like a push-up. You can use smaller weights as well. The single-hand weights. Use two~ one in each hand, lay down, and bring them up and down. You can mix it up, try different ways. You don't need a spotter, and each hand has control of each individual weight bar. Hope I could help.
