Need help on how to to build muscle and lose stomach fat?

I am a 21 year old male, weigh around 150lbs at a height of 5' 8''. I' m at a good weight but I have a fat stomach. I'm trying to replace my fat stomach w/ some abs, but also build my upper body muscle (arms, chest, shoulders) at the same time. I am currently jogging every M-F (doing 4 miles a day), then I go home and work out (M,W,F I work on my chest and shoulders with the bench, and T,TR,S I work on my arms by doing different types of curls). ive been drinking alot of water and absolutely cut any kind of sodas and sweet drinks out of my diet, but I still eat what I usually eat except I eat less than before(I use to eat around 5 meals a day, now I eat 3). I just want to know if I'm on the right track with my workout. should I cont jogging like that everyday or should I speed up my jogging and cut the distance to around 2 miles a day? I've seen improvement on my chest(just started on my arms and shoulders so it hasnt changed),but my stomach is still the same. should I do crunches

  1. I think your pretty much on the right track. maybe more weight training stuff than jogging will help.
  2. To gain weight you have to eat more calories than you burn. When adding calories, try to stay away from adding too much fat. While you can get fat from eating carbohydrates or protein, your body likes to use carbohydrates as fuel more than fat. To gain muscle, in addition to eating more you have to stimulate your muscles enough through resistance training that while they recover, they'll get bigger and stronger. To get an efficient workout you might want to join a gym if you aren't already a member.

When we lose weight, there is no way to specifically burn fat from one part of the body. Doing situps won't burn the fat that is covering your abs and doing tricep extensions won't get rid of the fat that is covering your triceps. The only thing you can do is lose weight all around and eventually the problem area will also improve.

  3. The supplement CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid) has been well researched in helping lose abdominal fat. In a nutshell, CLA works by shuttling glycogen to the muscle so that it is used as energy rather than stored as fat (I'm sure there's much more to it, but this is the Coles Notes version!).
The best results are in those who are working out and eating a low glycemic index diet, but over a 3 month period it has been shown to reduce abdominal fat in those who are moderately obese without any dietary or lifestyle changes.
It is a relatively long term, yet effective solution. You will see results in approximately 3 months (probably less with a healthy diet and exercise regime). The daily dosage of CLA is approximately 3600 mg - normally 4 - 6 capsules per day, depending on the brand.
CLA is readily available at health food stores. Most brands will have their own formula. It is most often a derivative of sunflower oil, but, again, depending on the brand it could be made from other plant oils.
As a bonus, it is also heart healthy.

Check with your doctor before starting anything new to be sure that it will not cause a conflict with any pre-existing condition or medications.

    Keep healthy!

  4. fist off, muscle doesnt appear overnight. be patient. with the running, I perfer to run 4 miles every other day and lift on the off days( if you can understand what I mean) ex run mon, life tues….ect bc you dont want to egt to the point where your body wont respond bc you didnt give it time to rest. resting is what builds muscle. if you want to run every day, then run hard one, easy the next, ect…Food: eat 5 meals a day ( to keep your blood sugar up) just dont have them be too big.keep drinking water, its one of the best things you can do. I believe crunches, leg lifts, situps, side-ups, and other work very very well for the stomach. you should be ripped pretty soon..lol

    good luck!
