Why are some women afraid of lifting weights?
Do they think that it will turn them all ''muscley'' like professional female bodybuilders?
- Most women I know are afraid to lift weights because they think that, if they do, they will turn into one of those bodybuilding women. If they do lift weights, they will grab weights that are so low, that it won't affect them in anyway. (Like using 1 pound dumbbells curling them.) Do they not know that a lot of them abuse steroids?
- Because we think will end up with big sexy muscles, well I do lift weights but once in a while, I lift the 5lbs though because I don't want to look all muscley, It's good to lift the 5lbs ones because they make you arms look smooth and beautiful.
- There are lots of reasons, but I think the most common one is lack of accurate information. Uninformed women believe they will gain weight (a HUGE fear), that certain body parts will increase in size (making their clothing fit poorly), and that it takes "too much time."
I disliked lifting weights at a local coed gym because it was too noisy. The weights were gettting banged around and left on the floor for someone to trip over. I hate it when people disrespect the equipment! The prevailing culture of the gym was undesirable for me.
Having taught fitness classes for 10 years, I would always encourage weight training as part of a total fitness program. In my aerobics classes, I incorporated the use of resistance bands instead of weights.
- I know some of you are probably going to say that it's none of my business, but I want to know why.
- isybella, yes I know what you're saying and I agree too but the point I'm trying to make is that women don't have the potential to be like some of the female bodybuilders because they use steroids. (Male produce over 20 times as much testosterone as women which is why I am not mentioning male bodybuilders.)
- Some women are afraid that if they lift too much, theyll get steroid bodies (minus the steroids.) This isn't the case. I lift sometimes, and I have muscle, but that was attained over a LONG time. you can't just get lifting and then automatically have muscle tone.
- Actually most woman just don't know the facts. They think they will end up looking like Arnold S.
I use a bow flex and I mostly consentrate on my core muscles and abs. You have to have to abs to support your upper torso creating support and better posture.
- A number of reasons, in addition to what you said.
A lot of women don't know how to do it correctly! Take a look at the machines. You will see a lot of women using them. The machines guide you and tell you what to do.
Being in the free weight room at a gym could be intimidating.
My gym doesn't have lighter weights in the weight room, so I lift free weights in the aerobics room. I lift for toning, so I use light weights (5, 8 and 10 pounds). The lowest weight in the weight room is 10 pounds, unless I use plates.
- I did lift for a while and since I am short and stocky my arms got pretty big and I looked a little more manly then I wanted so I stopped.I haven't lifted for years and I still have guns!!
- Because..some women dont like to lift weights because they are afraid of becoming too muscular. Most women dont want to be as muscular as men are, because its just not feminine. They want their arms to be skinny, not huge. I kinda agree with them..
