Why do some girls want to have big muscles and some don't?

I personally love the athletic look on women but over the years I have found out that alot of girls and women don't want to look muscular because they think it looks gross or manly Apart from the sector of female muscle fans, even alot of guys deem girls with muscles unnatractive, especially of they are bigger than themselves.

  1. My question really is if you take away the girls dream of wanting to be either a fitness or bodybuilding competitor, why do these women want muscles, knowing that the majority of the public will think negatively about them. Is it a simple "This is taboo and so therefore thats why I will do it!" kinda thing, is it a wanting to be bigger and stronger than men type thing (battle of the sexes) or is it just for the originality of the look on women.
  2. Like I said, I love the athletic look but what are your views?
  3. It is not really possible to generalise on these issues, as every female athlete/ bodybuilder is unique.

Most people - male and female - get into bodybuilding/ bodysculpting via two routes.

    1) Through training for another sport or activity, but then find the weight training/ physique building more enjoyable/ rewarding

    2) To improve self image through developing an overtly muscular body.

You do tend to find that a group mentality develops at many bodybuilding gyms - rivalries, friendships, co-dependencies, etc. - all the stuff you find among team-mates in other sports.

Because bodybuilding is extreme, it tends to both attract and nurture extreme attitudes - so those who do it longer, tend to do it most. Consequently, you find a lot of extreme characters in the sport - male and female.

The reasons you suggest are all valid and represented to a greater or lesser extent by many participants. However, there are others who are not so in your face about it - you just tend not to notice them so much because the bolshy attention seeker types tend to grab your attention.

Steroids are also making a huge comeback at the moment, which will inevitably draw more negative attention to the less desireable characteristics of those heavily involved in bodybuilding. This does not mean that all those involved in the sport are steroid abusers - there are many clean body builders who despair at the idiots whose short careers grab all the headlines with un-natural size and ridiculous egos.

The bottom line is that every individual sees the world through different eyes and what is ideal to one person is abhorent to the next.

  4. I will also add, alot of the women these days who want to be big are very pretty girls and not the stereotypical deep voiced, manly women you probably instantly associate with females with muscles.

I am trying to get as many opinions as possible here so please let them flow :)

  5. and please can you not answer with the usual "They must be lesbian!" type response. I would love to know what you think the psyche of women who want to be huge muscle wise is like.
  6. Its a personal goal really. I am a natural competitor, I personally prefer looking fit vs skinny.

  7. In almost every interview ive read with female young bodybuilders, they really like to emphasise the being bigger and stronger than the average guy thing.
