Instant tans, worrying about orange hues left over, worried about uneven application, et cetera et cetera… What's an ignorant guy to do?

1. I'm into bodybuilding competitively - well, I haven't competed but will this fall; its all set up. I've got the physique down, but the whole stage package has to include a good routine, music, oils, what not, and a deep, natural, even tan. I'd like to start experimenting now so I get it down right with the tan. (Pasty white doesn't let individual muscles show up from a distance, even if I do have 19 inch arms.) So what are the most RELIABLE products - I can take a month instead of an instant product, etc. if necessary - I just need a very good, natural, even tan. And yes, eventually budget matters - I'm not paying 50+ bucks a month to get this to work; if that's the case I'll just deal with cancer later.

4. www.hsn.com sells a product called tan towels. They give the look of a dark tan without any fuss or muss.

6. I would pay the money and get a spray tan, it goes on evenly and last a while. It's like $30 in my area, and buying OTC stuff can be expensive and a lot of that stuff works well on your legs but look terrible on other body parts. Since your going to be in front of huge audience go the spray tan route.
