What percentage of total nutrition should come from protein shakes when bodybuilding?

  1. I've heard of two theories.

    1) You should consume one gram of protein for every pound you currently weigh. Ex. If you weigh 150 pounds try and consume 150 grams of protein a day.

    2) You should consume 25% of your daily calories as protein. Ex. If you eat a 3000 calorie per day diet you should get 3000*.25 = 750 calories from protein. Since each gram of protein contains 4 calories you should consume 750/4 = 187.5 grams of protein a day.

Remember that several other factors can influence results such as intensity and regularity of training and the rest of your diet. It is still important to eat a very balanced diet. Consider the source of your protein as well. A balanced meal with carbs, other nutrients, and unsaturated fat will do more good than slamming another protein shake. Supplements should be used to fill out your diet, not as the center point.
