I am starting body building. I will be eating animal meats for my daily protien intake 171grams and carbohydrates 325grams. I want to take protien shakes but am unsure wether to include this in the total

Most bodybuilding/Mens health magazines (who are now all owned by supplement companies) state that as a general rule, a male needs 1-2 grams of protein per pound of body weight. How true do people think this is? That's a hell of a lot of protein (makes supplementing very necessary, I would need 185 grams), and if it is true, how were people jacked before protein supplements were available?
