How do I find the killer fish?

Well, two fish of mine just died. The one I am worried about is the danio. I HAD two, but now I only have one left. And unlike the other fish who died, the danio died over night and wasn't sick. I found his body with a major hole under his gills and another bigger adjacent one to that one but closer to the tail. AND, my other danio (who is still alive) is sort of spazzed out, and his top find is shaped too much like a football with one of its tips pointing upward, if you can imagine it. I think the other fish have a built a grudge up against these speedy little hyper-demons. I believe the culprit here is a blue gourami that I have, but other killers might be my catfish (who I can never find), a pleco, or my larger goldfish. If you have any ideas or think it might be another kind of fish (since I didn't name all my fish I might have the kind of fish you think it could be, ya know?) "Dead danio, scared danio, and a large castle where the dead danio mugged and eaten to death"= My summary

  1. My tank is a 30 gallon tank and I've never seen my goldfish act aggressive EVER. And sometimes I stay up pretty late, so ya…I really don't think it is the goldfish people. And if what you said was true he hasn't attacked the other goldifsh at all and he is really a lot smaller. But, I dunno, I will see if we can get more danios but we barely have any room. I'm getting sick of taking care of these things.
  2. What you have is a serious problem.
To begin with, those are tropicals(warm water fish) and you put a cold water goldfish in with them! Yup…the goldfish is your killer in the tank.
They are not fish that are meant to be in a communal tank and have been known to kill other goldfish if they are feeling crowded, or just because they can!!
Not too many people know that the cute little goldfish is a semi agressive fish and VERY territorial. Best thing you can do is to remove that goldy to it's own tank or bowl or just plain get rid of it.
The reason the dead fish was chewed up overnight is because that is what ALL species of fish will do. The dead are just another source of food for the tank. The catfish are not the killers but the species in the wild primarily feeds off the dead or dying.
Remove the goldfish and your tank should be ok. Good luck
  3. Ok let me get this right, you have a danio a gourami catfish a pleco and a goldfish all living in the same tank? Warm and cold water fish mixed? What other fish do you have in this 30 gallon? I am just amazed the goldfish lasted so long.

Fish will eat or pick at those that die in a tank. Fish don't have grudges however need to know what other fish you have.

  4. the killer fish is the catfish. they're meat eaters….try finding info on the internet or ask someone from the pet store.
  5. Difficult to say who is guilty, I suspect they could all be party to it as many different species together will cause tension, especially as you are mixing cold water & tropical fish in one tank. Do yourself & your fish a favour & start by getting Goldy a large 20 (or more) gallon tank with another similar Goldy for company, then like G says get your little Danio some schooling mates & everlasting should be hopefully be ok.
  6. chances are good he got chewed on after he died — the primary chewers are probably the catfish - -they are detritus eaters and detritus would include dead fish.

do you know the gender of your goldfish? male goldfish are nibblers. if you keep goldfish you have to separate sick ones because the males will pick on it constantly.

danios are shoalers — they like having friends around for defense. the poor little guy is alone now so that is probably part of why he is so weirded out. I would get him friends (minimum group would be 6) so hes not so stressed.

if you have an algae eater they are the most common fish bought for a community aquarium that end up being murderers. they go from eating algae to prefering the taste of fish slime coat.
