I want to weight train but im a Vegetarian, any tips?

Im a vegetarian but I want to gain some muscle mass to tone up my body, I work out every other day, I take a GNC mega-multi vitamin daily, and get plenty of rest but I know that it's all a waste unless I eat alot of protein to build muscle, so are there any high protein foods out there for weight training vegetarians?

  1. The next foods are loaded with proteins, eat them regularly:

Soy- soy beans, soy cheese, tofu, cereal with soy grits like hi-lo or weight watchers cereal etc, etc
Beans- black, lima, pinto, etc, etc they are just great:)
Quinoa- Eat it instead of rice. It has a lot of protein
Garbanzo beans- Eat them like that or in hummus
Nuts -Almonds & walnuts are great, but other nuts have a lot of protein too

  2. soy milk (vanilla) with peanut butter, a banana, and chocolate protein and ice–like a healthy dessert!
  3. yes. eat meat

as an alternative you can eat peanuts after your workout - but eat lots. these are high in carbs and protein, and you especially need this combination after a workout. You can also eat cottage cheese - it's high in protein. But don't kid yourself. Your body depends on a variation of different foods. you can rely on peanuts, cheese and a protein powder for a while, but what it really comes down to is that you just need to eat meat. Drop the vegetarian idea, the animals are being killed and stored in groceries regardless if you're a meat eater or not. It's bad enough they are killing the animals - but don't let them go to waste!

  4. Nutrient Data Laboratory: http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/se…
  5. Yes so many!
You can try protine shakes, protine bars, peanut butter, I usually make this protine smoothie.
in a blender all a little ice, water, the protine shake of your choice, a banana, peanut butter then blend it all and drink it it tastes great and is packed with protine
  6. first off I just wanna say peanuts are high in fat and protein not carbs.

Cheese, and nuts will be your best friends, along with peanut butter. But the most important thing you can still use is milk. Milk has fat protein and carbs it should be a staple in your diet.

Take protein powder(whey protein) right after your workout.

There are many vegetarian bodybuilders so it can be done.

  7. if your going to weight train to gain weight you will need to eat meat. peanuts and milk will simply not be enough. chicken, fish, lean steaks and egg whites are the best sources for protein. also supplement your diet with protein shakes (I use designer whey) which is considered the best on the market and the best tasting.
carbs are just as important. brown rice, oatmeal, pasta are ideal. carbs have received a bad reputation but are very important in maintaining and increasing energy levels.
if you choose to continue to be a vegetarian I would recommend that you not weight train.instead use body weight exercises IE push ups,sit ups ,chin ups, wall or body weight squats etc.body weight exercising is less demanding on the body and can be done more frequently. a couple of more points below
    -do not negleclt your cardio
-also the amount of protien you take in should be between .75-1.5 grams per pound of your body weight. for example I weighh 235lbs therfore I take in no less than 235 grams of protins a day. goodluck . and I urge you to seek out as much information as possible.

  1. BOCA, it is veggie burgers, everything vegetarian, plenty of protein. It is good to weight train, don't get discourage by being a vegetarian. Here go the website:

  4. Take this short quiz on About.com and find out how to make your own protein shake that's right for you: http://altmedicine.about.com/blwiz_smoot…

Protein shakes are a muscle veggie's best friend :)

  5. protein shakes and protein bars
  6. Check out this guy. He's a completely vegan body builder who has won competitions. I've seen him speak. He know what he's talking about.

    http://www.veganbodybuilding.org/…

It is very possible to gain muscle mass on a vegan diet. Broccoli has more protein than beef does, ounce for ounce.

  7. Lots of soy, spirulina, tofu, and beans together with rice make a complete protein. Make sure you get enough, your body is going to demand it.
  8. That's completely not true. I'm weight train pretty intensively, I don't do anything to get extra protein, I'm seeing gains and I'm Vegan. Check out http://www.veganbodybuilding.com…
  9. Whole grains, nuts and beans are high protein
  10. Morningstar Farms and Boca both make veggie foods high in protein- try the veggie dogs, they're really high for a small size. What about eating carbs too? If you're not vegan, try ice cream! NOTE to Gustav - VEGETARIANS DO NOT EAT FISH !!!!! IT ISN'T A VEGETABLE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!…
  11. Almonds, beans.
Some vegetarians eat eggs, milk and fish(tuna). And there are protein shakes.
  12. My sons drink protein shakes soy or rice totally vegan ..gives you lots of protein plus calories for bulking up ..works great ..they come in powder form add soy milk and blend..
  13. I don't know, but maybe these veg bodybuilders do,
